This new Area of Interest is focused ontechnologies and strategies to enhance coalbed methane (CBM) production intheU.S. In particular, technology advancements are sought that will allowproduction of vast CBM resources in the U.S. in environmentally acceptableways. Area of Interest 4 is being administered through the Office ofNaturalGas in coordination with the Environmental Solutions R D Program, at theNational Energy Technology Laboratory.The general objective of this Announcement is to develop new drilling,completion, and stimulation technologies, including those that minimizeenvironmental impacts that will aid the United States in meeting theincreasingnatural gas demands of the future. As most of the conventional reservoirshavealready been discovered, it will be necessary to drill into unconventional,more complex, deeper, harsher, and lower-quality reservoirs to search fortomorrow?s gas supply. These unconventional sources are known to containvastquantities of gas across large areas and throughout thick columns of stratainmany of the nation?s basins, however; approximately less than 1% of thisgascan be produced economically. In addition to the resource locked in lowpermeability sands, coal seams and shales contain significant natural gasresources. In particular, coalbed natural gas (or coalbed methane [CBM])resources are estimated to be 700 Tcf but only 18.7 Tcf are currentlybooked asproved reserves. Therefore, new technologies are needed to make theseresourceseconomic and help the nation meet its energy needs. Additionally,technologiesto economically access and produce from the deep (>20,000 feet) and/or hightemperature (>250/degrees/C) high pressures (>20,000 psi) caustic gasresources arealso included in this Announcement. The technologies and needs to drillandproduce the deep horizons have been identified in the Deep Trek R DPlanningWorkshop held March 20-21, 2001 and by industry forums such as The Gulf ofMexico Shallow Water Deep Gas workshops. (Read Amendment 01 for furtherdetails)To achieve the objectives, the DOE/NETL, through the Office of Natural Gas,isrequesting applications under four (4) Areas of Interest. This cover pagecontains information and allows for submission of an application for AreaofInterest 4: Technologies and Strategies to Enhance Coalbed Methane (CBM)Production ONLY.DE-PS26-05NT42395-4Area of Interest 4: Technologies and Strategies to Enhance Coalbed Methane(CBM) ProductionAs part of this Announcement, the development and demonstration of advancedtechnologies and techniques are sought that will allow a more efficient useofcapital (lower drilling, completion, and production costs), enhance thedesorption and flow of methane [in/from coal seams], increase EURs, andlimitand/or reduce environmental impacts related to CBM drilling, completion,andstimulation. Technologies, techniques and strategies are sought that areprimarily applicable to low rank coals, coals with relatively lower gascontent, coals with low and/or isolated cleat permeability, and relativelydeeper and/or thinner coals. In general, the DOE seeks innovations thatwilllead to the commercial development of CBM in basins/plays that haveheretoforebeen sub-economic.Enhanced recovery of CBM from traditional plays via noveltechniques/methodsthat have widespread applicability are not excluded from this request. Thedemonstration of truly state-of-the-art/emerging technologies andtechniques innew or underdeveloped basins and plays will also be considered if there isareasonable probability that the technology/exploitation scheme will lead tocommercial operations by industry. The DOE is NOT seeking, nor will itfund,projects that are primarily operational in nature or simply an[other]application of commonly used or widely available technologies/techniques.TheDOE?s ultimate objective is to support technology development anddemonstrations that will directly lead to commercial CBM production [by theprivate sector] from underdeveloped/non-traditional plays and basins.Aspects described in Area of Interest 3 may also be applicable to Area ofInterest 4 (CBM).
